One of the best studies in this area is https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25903751/ . True, it compared cloth masking to standard practice, not compared to no-mask, but it establishes that cloth masking has a very possible risk of increased infection.

Studies of masking for community transmission don't really exist due to how hard that is to properly study, but we have a lot of studies of masking in healthcare workers, who have greater compliance and skill. Move to a community setting and the picture looks much worse.

The benefit of masks (if you drink the respiratory droplet kool-aid, I don't) = marginal benefit of blocked respiratory droplets - deleterious effects from hands contamming mask, masks contamming hands, altered risk behavior, increased production of aerosols, increased net airfl

...net airflow, and the fact that masks require conversational partners to stand closer together and/or speak louder which could easily eclipse the benefits. Now let's talk more about aerosols and the actual fluid dynamics at play

@mamasaurusMeg for any citations you have on: increased aerosol xmission from masks, SARS-2 aerosol transmission more generally, etc. I've read a lot of studies here but didn't take notes on most of them so I always have to randomly google and hope they pop up again :P5 replies 4 retweets 40 likes -
Meaning to do this anyway. Strap in. My main concern with masks is their ability to force filter droplet (with a predictable 6 foot arc) into aerosol, which has an 18-20 foot trajectory, remains aloft for gravity. It remains aloft for hours, and doesn’t respond predictably 1/

I think we would have noticed by now if masks made the virus travel MORE.

Replying to @ScottAdamsSays @threadreaderapp and
we'd also have noticed if masks made the virus travel LESS.
