Isn't it time to stop reporting "The first openly gay person to..." do whatever? That framing turns the least important fact into the most important part of the story.

Here in rural-ish Ohio, people seem much more willing to express racist or homophobic views right out loud again. I'm a pretty ordinary, schlubby looking guy, and have had "f*g" yelled out car windows at me, for just walking down the street with my husband.

Yes it is useful. Because if they are the first openly gay person to “do whatever” then we are early in the process. I think your concerns are unfounded since there is almost no newsworthy value in being the 2nd.
