Another factor that isn't usually talked about is where the "official" thermometers are mounted. They're often in places that are heat sinks like urban areas or around airports. Because even most grad students won't want to go out to fix a sensor somewhere in banjo country.

One of the real fun things is to look at the Purple Air map (I did when we had the fires around here for air quality) and notice that there's a 10-15 degree drop from urban to suburban areas, and another 5-10 from suburbs to forests and farms.

To what end? What can an experiment like this actually accomplish other than perhaps educate a person on how some of the difficulties in recording and tracking temperature?

The “official” temperature via phone might go up while your own thermostat does not.
