Question for engineers/developers: Some say it is impossible to create a sufficiently secure voting app. My gut/experience tells me it is totally possible if cleverly designed. Who is right?

It will be possible. At some point. Somewhere. No question. But it’s very far from possible today, and especially in the US. That’s what the experts mean when they say it’s impossible. They mean practically, right now. It’s not the theory that’s the problem.

I can't think of any part of it that is even especially hard.

Don't try to get smart with the election process with tech! Complex tech makes it harder for average people to watch the process for cheating, so they ended up having to take the word from some 'authority', which can be compromised. Vote in person /w ID on paper and manual counts

Well, let’s start with being able to prove that someone is who they say they are, remotely and digitally. Except that doesn’t just apply to people who use online banking today. This has to work for people who are not technical, and who might not even have a phone/computer.

Scott, it is a computer science research field on its own. Not fully solved. At least not in a way that everyone can agree works.

In use, the app isn't transparent. Voters can't know what is deployed on the voting infrastructure. Hell, election supervisors can't know ("Our vendor updated the machines and showed us the checksum"). 0 technical competence among officials.

With 10k Locals installs on the Play store, you should ask Assaf or Dave this very same question...

Convincing people that we can get rid of tally-ers is the only hard part. As you've been saying, they will always have the wrong incentives. I've been working through the crypto.

Only the aspect of keeping the ballot/voter secrecy intact while guaranteeing the outcome is reflective of the actual votes is challenging. There are a few ways to go about it. The rest is a "solved problem" given current tech & applications in use today.

Why don't u post your technique. What language, post method, database will you be using. Which security protocols. Error checking and about 1k other things. And even with that too hackers will get in within a few days

The hard part would be getting everyone to agree on the parameters and definitions.
