CDC tracks flu-related deaths. People do die of the flu every year, but not every flu-related death actually has the flu. Exactly what percentage of flu-related deaths did not have the flu is unknown. It may be a large number.

From week 20 of 2015- Deaths involving Pneumonia and Influenza (P&I) reported to the Bureau of Vital Records increased to 70 deaths during Week 19, resulting in a season-to-date total of 2,937 P&I associated deaths in Missouri5 .

And actually the death rates for flu vary between 30,000- 150,000 with the variable being the number of circulating flu viruses during a given season, the strains of circulating flu viruses.
