You are correct when you say don’t use metaphors in your books, because we just end up arguing about the metaphor and not the actual item. Of course I can’t help myself, and I’m sorry for asking. Do you know people that make their own seatbelts? Lots of home made masks.

Seatbelts are for people in cars who are at risk from injury if there is a car accident - you don’t force pedestrians to wear seatbelts. Young, healthy people don’t need face masks.
