Maybe Trump should have addressed that directly when it came up tonight, but no, never mind.

I've had time to think about it and I've formed an opinion somewhat counter to Scott's. The "commitment technique" is an issue I care about so I wish I had a broader reach, but maybe someone will see this and save themselves a lot of grief. (1/7)pic.twitter.com/vN3sOX85Cn

Salesmen, conmen, and abusers (ok, and lawyers) use a "commmitment" technique on customers/victims/opponents. The trick is to get someone to commit to something small, and then reel them in once they are hooked. (2/7)

The key tell is when a commitment is asked based on a lie. "Can you please promise me you won't let your mother destroy our marriage?" This is how an abuser uses the commitment technique to begin to isolate his victim. (3/7)

The whole debate exchange started by Wallace was premised on the lie that Trump had not denounced "white supremacists." Wallace had all the time in the world to plan a trap and all Trump had to do was walk into it. (4/7)

This isn't to say that Wallace should not have brought it up. However, he raised the issue in a dishonest way in the form of the commitment technique which Trump would surely recognize. (5/7)

The best way out of the commitment technique is to reframe and deflect. Could Trump have handled it better? Maybe. I don't care. (6/7)

What I care about is that people recognize manipulation techniques used by abusers, brainwashers, and conmen so they can escape them. Trump's response is a good enough example to go by when on the spot. ("I'm willing to but you're full of crap.") (7/7)

I describe this in Win Bigly, regarding Jake Tapper asking Trump to disavow David Duke. It was a trap. The next question would have been about Steve Bannon or someone less controversial.

So your expectation is that he couldn't merely say he doesn't understand the question about Bannon, right? It would make sense to answer it after the one about Duke? Doesn't that imply that Bannon is, in some way, adjacent to Duke? How does that reflect on his former employer?
