It still doesn't "choose its own goals", the problem is that their goals are to maximize app usage and engagement for profit. This brings the unintended socially chaotic consequences. Things would be 180 if they were tuned for social cohesiveness.

The funny thing is all science fiction movies got it wrong. I don't remember 1 sci-fi where the danger was AI hijacking our attention, modifying our behavior, and amplifying the worse parts of us. (all unintentionally because $)

Sometimes Social Media is just the problem and not the solution. If they shut down 4 Chan and twitter and fb etc... even for 4 weeks... it would be such a peaceful time.

It's the paperclip problem. We've (accidentally) made machines -- out of computers & people & political parties & economic concepts like businesses -- that are competing for 'attention'; eyeballs/clicks/u-payments. They're *self-optimising* for 'attention'. JUST attention.
