Leaders are supposed to persuade the public on how much to worry about different topics. That's the primary function of leadership. I hope this pundit doesn't teach at a major college or something. I'd ask for a refund.https://twitter.com/tribelaw/status/1304027086466805760 …

Trump: “I'm the leader of the country, I can't be jumping up and down & scaring people," Trump told Sean Hannity. "I don't want to scare people. I want people not to panic, & that's exactly what I did." This from the guy who screams about “carnage” in the suburbs. Some leader!

Wouldn’t the death numbers, however, justify to persuade the public to worry more on coronavirus than on riots?

No. You want the "right" amount of worry on each topic. Some worries might need to be dialed up and others better dialed down. If we had "enough" worry on the virus but not "enough" on other topics, adjustments are warranted.

How do you define “right” level of worry though? In my view deaths to be avoided (eg using masks, avoiding riots) could be a good measure.

Wouldn't you want people to worry more about a spreadable disease in order to reduce the spread of that disease? He (and others) waited too long to, so the disease spread further than it would have *if people were more worried about it sooner.*

You are right on that, but that makes you wrong on Trump. Clearly, Trump dialed down the worries that needed to be dialed up, and vice versa.
