It's a big challenge. Green energy sources are highly variable and often do not peak coincidentally with load demands. Some load shedding can help but at this time we need fossil fuels or nuclear to ballast the variability of the electrical system.

Well that is only true if you exclude nuclear. Which if you argue from a sustainable standpoint is the most "green" energy source.
