How is mask effectiveness still a debate five months into this pandemic? Do we really have no credible data correlating mask use and spread of coronavirus? Here I only care about real world curve-bending, not lab experiments. The lab stuff is nearly all bullshit like this one.https://twitter.com/AlexBerenson/status/1293669103241224197 …

You're mixing two different arguments here Scott: 1. Do masks work? Probably, but unknown (the argument that you need to compare it to an alternate scenario that did not occur can go both ways). 2. Are masks a good risk management decision? Yes.

I struggle understanding this argument. Can this question be answered if there are no “gold standard” studies. So isn’t it more conjecture that we think they may work. But the “experts” now say they do, but by their own standards no studies actually prove it to “gold standard”?

Hint: Distribution is seasonal based on latitude/climate (Hope-Simpson). Compare no mask to w/mask of similar climates and you'll see the viral propagation per 1M is very similar.

Seems like at best that masks can help to "flatten the curve". They aren't going to defeat the virus.
