Another reason for the obsolescence of cities. I’ve been tweeting about this for a while. You heard it here first #obsoletecities

Good point. 5G could be an city killer.

Cities provide physical proximity that was needed in the factory era. Eg, the magazine needed the printer, ink maker, writers, ad agencies nearby. No longer needed with fast cars, email, teleconferencing, food distribution, etc The office obsolete = city as we know it obsolete.

People need physical proximity as a species. That means cities, and clustering of companies. Big finance doesn't need to be close together technically for decades, yet they do. Small businesses like garages want to cluster in industry areas with their suppliers close by.

All very reasonable points for Exploration: First of all, I’m talking about large, densely packed cities versus everything else including exurbs, suburbs and rural. People can still go to a suburban bar to get laid, but they mostly have switched to online. 👇

Big finance has been moving away from the cities for years. Did you notice that there is no such thing as a physical AMEX exchange any more? Yes, certain small businesses still need physical proximity, but none that need close skyscrapers, except for elevator repair businesses.

Big finance is concentrating. London City, Frankfurt, especially Amsterdam's South Axis are booming as never before. Some are moving because of Brexit - to another cluster. Then there's the accelerating population growth. In tiny Holland alone, 1 million houses to be added ...

... in 10 years. Holland has 18 mln people in 7 mln homes. The first designs to ready the country for 45 mln people were made 15 years ago. It will be less, but within the next 50 years the 5 major cities will have clustered into a big one, then become one with German Ruhrgebiet.

Cities also offer instant availability of everything you want, faster than Amazon can ever do with drones. It's a mindset: I want it, right now, it's there within 200 metres. 5G by its speed could very well enhance this mindset - and help accelerate the growth of cities.

You are right that cities offer instant availability. So do two very large malls each about five minutes from my house. It used to take me that long to get from my high-rise building apartment to my street. I’m not living on a potato farm.

Malls might be dead forever. But Amazon and others will approach same day availability for the basic stuff.

I can't help but think at some point there will be a backlash to all this, and masses of people will discover they like leaving the house and hanging out with each other again.

Absolutely. There will be a big rush to restaurants, for instance. Except, I hear that yelp has said that half of them are permanently closed. There’s a big opportunity here for people to reinvent the restaurant.

Yes, but malls are not only about availability of merchandise. Where will teenagers hang out? Oh, wait a minute, I hear there is something called social media. The best of social media has not been invented yet. It’s not even going to be called social media.
