If you have only seen studies saying masks don't help, or you have only seen studies saying they do help, you just found out you are a low information voter.

The recent 'studies' are models. There're plenty of real studies over the last several decades that are real.
-
Studies of what? Several studies and decades of time seems odd. It is possible to study a model and that can be confusing to talk about.

Even peer review doesn't mean a study is great. It just means a handful of others didn't find any glaring errors. It says nothing about sample size or testing methods, etc. Journals still expect readers to critically assess the study article & judge it's utility for themselves.
-
Cochrane review, etc are a little better for the average person. They're supposed to be experts who pool data from multiple studies, evaluating the quality of each, & summarizing the result. Sometimes they end up falsely strengthening the conclusions of several weak studies tho.

Not to advocate violence, but, as a thought experiment, would the experts' predictions benefit from a steel cage match to see whose studies are better-founded? A little skin in the game can clarify the mind.

Skill in the presence of fraud is a counter argument. Wakefield fabricated data and derailed autism research for basically a generation.

Wrong. Peer review ensures (to an extent) that researchers analyzed and interpreted the results accurately, so a high level check and balance because even top researchers can screw its up (or introduce bias). If top researchers screw it up the “public” doesn’t have a chance.
