I think it depends on how you deal with your victimhood. You can talk with the person that offended you or try to understand why the thing was said and done... or you can blame everybody that is different from you and demand an authority figure to oppress the people you dislike.

I'm not a mental health professional but I've been dealing with mental abuse in home and at school since I can remember. I'm dealing fairly well, could've blamed society for it. But I don't want to play the blaming game. So it doesn't matter which parts of the abuse was real.

The only thing worse than is the mentally unbalanced with an imaginary grievance is one with a legitimate one. They feel "justified" do all sorts of horrible crimes. It's been a problem since the dawn of humanity.
