I have a masters degree in film and teach film at a top tier university, An over twenty five year professional career and I walk into pitches with a fully realized bible pilot and seven season arc, and often times told it’s not enough. But Lena Dunham, cool.https://twitter.com/THR/status/853626314649219073 …

I lost my TV show for being white when UPN decided it would focus on an African-American audience. That was the third job I lost for being white. The other two in corporate America. (They told me directly.)

If your show was top on the ratings on that network do you think they would have cancelled your show?

It was doing well in the first season ratings, by UPN standards, and they renewed it. Then they gave away the time slot (which is death to a show) as they converted to a different audience. And the answer to your question is yes. One show would not have changed their focus.

So did they cancel it for bad ratings, as you have previously claimed, or because you’re white? And why would viewers care if YOU were white? It was a cartoon.

Viewers prefer shows they relate do. I can't introduce a black character in Dilbert for the same reason other white cartoonists don't do it. You either have to give the character no flaws (boring) or you get cancelled for giving them flaws.

See Franklin (boring) in Peanuts, or the hacker kid from Bloom County years ago. Boring. I don't have the freedom you imagine I do.

As a white cartoonist who writes (flawed) black characters, I assure you we can do it. It takes a little bit of research and asking uncomfortable questions, no different than writing a character with a profession or issue you're not familiar with.

Other white cartoonists DO do it, though, be they traditional newspaper comics like Preteena, Peanuts, LuAnn, or modern webcomics like, um, most of them. Hell, *I* do it, at my own comic, http://SaffronComic.com . It's super easy, and basically anyone can do it.
