Now that the autopsy noted there was fentanyl in Floyd’s system, which kills about 50,000 Americans per year, and looks exactly like what we saw on video, the odds must be reassessed.

Likewise, we have to add some nuance to what “resisting” arrest means under the influence of fentanyl. The drug can induce a zombie state of mind. Zombies ONLY resist, because they are incapable of doing otherwise.

If the police recognized the zombie situation, which I assume they see a lot, they would know that negotiating, threatening, and even causing pain would be ineffective.

Nothing short of full body control is even slightly likely to work. Don’t confuse fentanyl with drinking. Even a drunk can follow instructions. Zombies can’t.

None of this excuses the police, because they are trained to be smarter than us about this stuff. Even I would have known not to put someone who MIGHT be on fentanyl in a constricted/awkward neck and breathing situation.
