Of the 35 men, more than two thirds — about 69 percent — had low levels of the male sex hormone, which helps control the body’s immune response ⁦@_Tom_Pappas⁩ ⁦@Mangan150⁩ ⁦@ScottAdamsSays⁩https://nypost.com/2020/05/14/men-with-low-testosterone-at-greater-risk-of-dying-from-coronavirus/ …

Study uses a threshold for low testosterone for men >50 years. However, average age of men in the study is 62. Testosterone falls with age, so the levels for the average 62-year-old participant might just be normal. Also, obesity correlates with low testosterone.

      Dr Sam Pappas @DrSamPappas
These findings suggest that a distinct proportion of male patients (6 out of 35; 17.1%) show primary hypogonadism. The remaining proportion on the other hand (18 out of 35; 51.4%) of male COVID-19 patients present low testosterone levels that is not of testicular but hypothalamus

They correlate a lot of variables with the COVID outcome that are in turn correlated with each other. Given that 35% of the men had cancer and 26% had diabetes, this seems like a group in poor health in general. Low testosterone might then just reflect that.

Agreed. But maybe still helpful to know at what levels low T, low vitamin D, maybe low LDH indicate “extreme risk” from general bad health that has not yet caused other major health problems.

As long as older males don't start thinking "Hey, I'm an Alpha, of course, so I'm immune to this Beta virus", I'm all good. 😉

That's a nice thread on the type of bias we might be seeing in most of these studies:https://twitter.com/bristimtom/status/1259458854020165632 …

A few of us at the @mrc_ieu have a preprint discussing collider bias with a focus on coronavirus research. We're of the opinion that collider bias is a big banana skin that a lot of studies may be stepping on. The 'obesity paradox' explained here looks very similar to the 'smoking paradox' we've been seeing with regard to COVID-19:https://catalogofbias.org/biases/collider-bias/ …
