Best move: contain virus like other countries have done. But here's a steelman case for "COVID-19 is serious, but tactics should change" >90% of US deaths over 55 ~75% of US hospitalizations over 50 66% of NY hospitalizations contracted at home May be harder to spread outdoorspic.twitter.com/cQqPZSGKrb

I still think best policy is what other countries have done: drive daily new cases down, ideally to zero. Then use tech (test/trace/isolate) & policy (eg central quarantine) to keep the reproduction number below one until drug or vaccine arrives. https://www.endcoronavirus.org/countries#winning …pic.twitter.com/vda7NLc4UB

That said, let's indulge the steelman case for changing tactics. Not the naive "let's shake hands". But the one that says "the virus mainly hits older people, so it wasn't a big deal. Some are contracting virus at home, so lockdown didn't work". What's the issue here? [cont.]

Well, one issue is that it's not acceptable to just let your older citizens die when other countries have managed to contain it. South Korea has 1/6 the population but 1/300 the deaths of the US (~250 vs ~75,000). Seoul vs NYC even more stark.https://twitter.com/PKhakpour/status/1257901650582417409 …

Seoul with over 9 million people (basically close to NYC at over 8 million), also extremely dense & with a major subway system, had 2 COVID19 deaths. Two. We are at over 19K dead in NYC.

Another issue is that US "lockdown" has been a cargo-cult lockdown that didn't copy the other aspects of successful responses, like mass testing, central quarantine, masks, and many other details. See this thread from March 16 on this:https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1239428553352966144 …

Another alternative is to just copy as many features of the Taiwanese 124 point plan as we can still execute on. My feeling is that we may be blindly cloning one aspect of the Asian response (lockdown) but not the sum total of what they did. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762689?guestAccessKey=2a3c6994-9e10-4a0b-9f32-cc2fb55b61a5&utm_source=For_The_Media&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ftm_links&utm_content=tfl&utm_term=030320 … pic.twitter.com/A7PWClQAdG

But essentially the issue is it is just a very bad idea to let the virus go vertical. Moral: many older Americans will die, unknown long-term effects on younger Pragmatic: economy won't recover till virus is solved Realpolitik: the US's standing in the world will diminish

What is your estimated "too late" date for successfully reviving the economy? Could we stay locked-downish as long as it takes to have, for example, sufficient testing capabilities or meds that work? That could be six months to a year.

Or longer, and tin-pot tyrants such as Newsome, Whitmer, and Cuomo will drag this out for as long as they can.

Among Dems the recommended lockdown time period seems to be at least until after the election. 😉

The issue is that there is no way to “bring the economy back” with this virus widespread. Travel, restaurants, events, comcerts etc can’t happen at scale until its gone

They're waiting until Nov 4 2020. This is collective punishment for not voting for the lying corrupt hag that the media told us to vote for. Once Orange Man is out, the economy will open and COVID-19 goes away. People will still get it, just no news about it.
