Okay, I see the problem. You believe Trump that testing is coming soon enough. There is no evidence of that, only evidence of the opposite. I once believed that bullshit too.

It’s not about believing Trump. He’s not the only source of testing. Where are getting this from? Which local or state government officials are you speaking with? Is Dilbert-making your only credential here? Is tweeting your only relevant experience?

Do you have a source that says we will have enough tests to test our way out? I have only seen the opposite, such as Bill Gates saying we are nowhere near and not heading in the right direction quickly.

We wasted April but we could have enough tests now. Will we waste May?

You're where I was a week ago, when I was believing they could ramp up testing quickly (in a few months). Bill Gates called bullshit on that recently. We won't even get close to the test kit numbers we need to test our way out. No expert will claim otherwise WITH NUMBERS.

I will defer to your medical opinions, but I'd ask you to defer to my ability to call bullshit on management overclaims. (I have some experience there.) There is no plan in place to get the quantity of testing we need to test our way out. Probably a year away from that.

No need to defer to my claims. If you believe there is credible information on how many tests we need to test-our-way-out, and how many we can produce this year, I'd like to see it. You win the day as soon as I do.

It's not testing our way out. A plan of isolating only symptomatic people who test positive doesn't align with the science. We need to target pre-symptomatic people. Good news is this means fewer tests needed because it never gets out of hand. 1/

How does it never get out of hand? Getting at pre-symptomatic cases via contact tracing and supporting them to isolate. Plus, we start from fewer active cases by actually doing stay home orders until active cases resolve. 2/

It will get out of hand (hospital-wise) in places. That’s the only option. The other options are magical thinking.

It will? More like it could. It's the only option? That's reductive thinking and a failure of imagination.

It will not get out of hand if done right. That's the only option. The idea that you will have 5,000 Americans dying of coronavirus every day but the economy won't be in the gutter is magical thinking.

I don’t really see how “restart the economy” and “accept, say 2,000-5,000 deaths a day” can co-exist. If we reopen with no plan, some work will restart, but no one’s going out spending in numbers. Look at traffic data from China: no movement on weekends.

And if it “gets out of hand”, those places going back into lockdown. We’re doing this for a year and a half, and someone the economy survives that? We can do better.

When conditions are right for wildfires, you get wildfires. You can't "flatten the curve" so fire fighting resources aren't swamped. Fire departments do a great job mobilizing and allocating resources to geographic hot spots. Can the health care system take anything from that?
