True. But ask yourself if winning was an option. The crisis asks our leader to decide who among us lives and who dies. The presidency is the wrong tool for that job.https://twitter.com/Cernovich/status/1257705963043164160 …

Trump lost the messaging war on coronavirus in a way that I've never seen.

Yes, the winning play was to get to coronavirus early, lay marker on the table, and then if Dems don't come to heel, you lay blame to them. Instead Trump was outmaneuvered, and Dems took the winning play.pic.twitter.com/fYPRTik7Rl

Getting to it early depended on knowing it was the smart thing to do, which was not yet known. Closing flights was an easy risk management move, and correct. I don't think messaging was his problem early on so much as believing Fauci.

Pandemic is high risk, low probably event, meaning it's worth a hedge vs. "It's great," all-in messaging.

Plus if Trump raised coronavirus in Jan (he knew, many others were telling him), then he has attack on Dem for impeachment. If coronavirus had been nothing, oh well, just another talking point. But that marker on table, getting there first, would have been massive win.

We also differ in assumptions about those early warnings. I'm assuming there are LOTS of similar warnings about all sorts of risks all the time. A president needs advisors who know to hammer on the important ones, not stick it in a report.

If he had made an issue of Coronavirus before it obviously was an issue, he would have been roasted for trying to distract from impeachment.

Exactly! I am sure there are warnings (in memos filed somewhere in the caverns of the federal govt) right now about asteroids, nuclear mishaps, sunspots, Russia, China, Middle East, newer viruses, climate change, bioterrorism, national debt, you name it. To lead is to prioritize.

That's a fact. It highlights Trump's critical weakness in HR decisions outside the media department (remember Sessions, Tillerson, the chiefs of staff etc.). Goes back to A/B testing versus anticipating. You can A/B test people for some WH jobs, not for a pandemic - too costly.

This is also why we can expect Trump to continue to fail. It's been three months and he hasn't fired anyone over the coronavirus yet. The CDC and FDA's failures are well documented. What is he waiting for? Surprising that he is so slow even to react.

In other news, doesn’t Trump gain leverage because if the opposition tries to blame him for the economy he now has an excuse they can’t deny?
