"Good" ideas implies a judgement that undermines the 1st Amendment. Certainly Kim Jung Un doesn't think that giving this sex slaves freedom is a "good" idea. The 1st Amendment protects us from people in positions of power deciding what the "good" ideas are.

The reverse of the first part of your hypothesis is that social media does not influence people's ideas. I know his study was on search which is somewhat different that SM, but what you see influences. https://www.foxnews.com/media/google-bias-search-results-trump-clinton-epstein-levin …https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/19/us/politics/google-votes-election-trump.html …

How would we know, Scott? We don’t know what we don’t know. It’s the principle that matters. It’s evil to burn books — even shitty books, even books that “everybody already knows”.

Good point. They obviously, get through to the people paying close attention. Should we conclude it has no effect? Is there merit to argument that if you slow them down even 20%, you are putting your finger on the scale?

Yes. But if the parties are only persuading their own team, probably doesn’t matter. You could reduce Republican social media traffic 50% and probably get the same outcome.

If getting through means being heard before they're purged over and over and over and dismissed (by people who say they're not biased with their platforms) then sure. They get through. And they rely on the small sum of individuals paying close attention to spread that angle.

Only to get shadowbanned or blocked on Twitter/fb/YT/google/etc et al. So the only way to hear that news is from an individual in the end. MSM and silicon valley have influence. To say otherwise is silly. It's WHY we all hear "fake news" constantly now.
