Restaurant reopening ideas: Instead of getting back to where we were, why not try to get to something better? As an ex-restaurant owner, I have some suggestions.

Relax local zoning laws to allow for expanding restaurant seating into sidewalks, roads, and parking lots. Traffic can be redirected. Won’t work everyplace.

Allow some restaurants to temporarily set up barbecue businesses in parks for the summer.

Using the honor system, open first to families and couples that have been isolating in the same household. No mixed seating at tables. Maybe loosen that for outdoor dining where there is space.

For outdoor dining, allow dogs to accompany on leashes. That isn’t legal where I live.

The larger idea is to rethink restaurant models from scratch. Maybe we can make them better than ever, at least in some ways.

This is the only suggestion I think would really result in a bevy of unintended consequences. The Karens of the world would have a field day.

Disney has tried this before, at least for bringing food. Pretty easy to see that concept continued with a dedicated system for your idea. Or a non-publicized restaurant number for texting.https://www.disneytouristblog.com/be-our-guest-restaurant-lunch-review/ …

People are awful, so this idea would not be great. BUT imagine a system where, based on geolocation, you're prompted to install an app when you go inside. When you leave, the app is uninstalled.

Within the app, you login with a code the server gives you to identify your table, then you can place/modify/pay your order, and offer common requests. "Forgot fork" "refill drinks" etc. For anything less typical, a "summon server" or "summon manager" option.
