I'm seeing opinions that we should shut down as long as possible to buy time until a maybe-weak-vaccination is available in 12-18 months. To me, that looks like a guaranteed catastrophe versus reopening the economy sooner, which looks to be about a 50% chance of catastrophe.

What are the general benchmarks that separate “catastrophe” from “this just really sucks?” Quarter of the hospitals overwhelmed? .5% of the U.S. population dying from virus?

Catastrophe means the economy isn't coming back this decade. Hundreds of millions die. That sort of scale.

Ya like that happened with previous Corona viruses in the past 10 years. Read history, study science and ,age sure you discover deception in the data.

I've seen that opinion before, but keep missing out on what will be the direct cause of death of those hundreds of millions? Are you guys implying hunger? (because it can't be caused by lack of money or unemployment - as they are not sources of life and health).

Money and employment are a source of mental health for many. Suicides and child abuse will increase the longer the economy shut down for example.

The contagion we're facing is less lethal than the Spanish Flu and the nation came roaring back within a few years after that. #stopthelockdown

In order for that to happen, we are going to need some kind of technological breakthrough on par with the proliferation of electricity and the automobile. These were big drivers of that recovery. What is on the horizon this time?

The unseen damage abroad will be far exceeding the seen damage here in the US. The support that trickles down to the poor into other countries from our normal excess will dry up quickly if not already. I am sure even charity inside the country is already shrinking.

Worst case scenario with the latter proposition is the hundreds of millions dead + an economy not coming back this decade. Worst case scenario with the former is far fewer dead and the economy not coming back this decade.

Is there even a world anymore where we let the virus “run its course?” Won’t at-risk people, and many not at-risk, still modify their behavior?
