You have to admit he’s the right president for this decision. ⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩pic.twitter.com/XCGB9OX760

It's worth remembering the last time the US pursued a policy of isolationism and withdrawal from multilateral organisations, however flawed. That ended in WWII and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of young American men who died on foreign fields. Don't betray their memory.

If history repeated, I would take that advice. But it doesn't.

I didn't say that history would repeat itself, I said it was worth remembering what happened last time and that we should not betray that... 'by failing to learn what we can from it' is what I would have continued were it not for char limits

WWII feels like more of a Hitler problem than a withdrawing from corrupt institutions problem, but I understand your point.

Oh gosh, no. WWII was mainly a multilateral institutions problem. It's arguable that WWII started when Japan marched out of league of nations after invading China, making war with the US inevitable in the East. And in the West, no EU or NATO to keep the peace...

In that example, wasn't invading China a bigger problem than pulling out of the league?

Not to my understanding - Japan invaded China because it knew that the League + the lack of other institutions meant that it could get away with it. The US + others tried to use the League to prevent it, but Japan just flipped us the bird. It's worth reading the rest of my thread

In your example the international organization didn’t help.

In my examples (please check the others), the failure to have a strong multilateral organisation was the problem in Europe, Russia and Asia, hence we set up stronger ones post WWII. So, defunding WHO without a) trying to reform it or b) putting in place a better org is not smart

Defunding is a great way to incentivize reform. US shouldn’t stay in corrupt institutions. That includes the UN.
