I can imagine a system in which we are all anonymously tracked for virus tracing purposes. The algorithm could spit out text messages warning people of contact with the infected without any human being aware of the specifics. Maybe have some bipartisan oversight too.

My point is that we probably no longer have the option of maintaining both our freedom and our personal privacy in the same fashion as the past. But I think we can be smart enough to limit the downside risk.

I don't favor it, either. But given the demonstrated principle that laws are for the little people, I'm confident the people with power will retain their privacy.

What you favor or don’t won’t matter a hill of beans because you won’t be making the laws. Congress regularly exempts itself from laws, eg insider trading. As long as they throw enough bones to enough voters those of us who approve of neither practice are SOL.

I remember once hearing one should assume any idea you like will be implemented in the most intrusive and ham-handed way, then ask if you really want it that badly.
