People think #coronavirus deaths are overcounted because so many of the dead had other major health issues. But I doubt this is as big of a problem as people think. Try some examples in this thread.

A man with a spear in his chest goes to the ER and also seems to have coronavirus symptoms. He dies within the hour from loss of blood. Does that get coded as a coronavirus death? I'm thinking probably not.

My point is that while it might seem logical that one can't know for sure the cause of death in a patient with multiple potential causes, the reality is that doctors can be 95% sure just by the timing and specifics of the situation. Would any ER doctor like to weigh in on this?

but the cancer weakened the body in the first place. If that person did not have cancer, the Corona virus very possibly wouldnt have killed him. By your logic, a vast majority of people don't die of cancer, they die of the last opportunistic virus or bacteria that they caught

That's how it works typically. My MIL had breast cancer, underwent chemo, had a complication that led to a fatal infection. Cause of death on death cert=sepsis/ infection. Cause of death per her family = cancer & its complications.

It only matters that recording is consistent for comparison. Some countries do, some countries do not. (86% of deaths have 1+ cofactors) If that person did not have cancer, would COVID kill them? It would be easy to standardize this data, but it is not happening.

Same as my first example response, UNLESS, they have a positive test in any of these examples, then, yes, they can be considered a Corona death.

This is the case I think is most important. Reporting that as a death due to the virus is fine, but the people working the models need to have access to the compounding factors because they affect what the data means. Whether or not they have that information, I don't know.

Going to the hospital is probably the cause of death. Not a smart idea, really, ever, but especially not now.

Many people with lung CA also have COPD (from smoking) or emphysema
