This is about keeping power—not ideological conviction or saving lives. @AdamSerwer @TheAtlantic @OmarMKhateeb @ScottAdamsSayshttps://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/609244/ …

Is the whole article about mind-reading or just the title?

Good news Scott—no mind-reading required, just a knowledgeof historical facts. Also, as we discussed previously (and as you previously admitted), no one can read minds, but everyone can draw reasonable inferences from data.

Well, I don't know how one measures the "conviction" of strangers. But I'll trust you that someone has that power.

Assume a conviction is a firmly-held belief. If Republicans rally against spending when they are out of power (to reduce the national debt or skepticism about governmental capacity) only to increase spending when they are in power, wouldn’t that indicate a lack of conviction?

Why not? Being evasive is not winning an argument, nor is it persuasive. You are supposed to be a Master of Persuasion.

The alternative explanations are more compelling: There is no known way to reduce the deficit in our current system, so no one tries. I don't need to know anyone's internal thought process to know why they don't try the undoable.

Isn’t this fake news? Didn’t @BillClinton and Jimmy Carter reduce the deficit? Trump promised to eliminate the deficit in 8 years, but that was a lie. He’s only increased the deficit. What alternative explanations are you talking about and why are they more compelling?

Ancient history. Today, no Dem or GOP candidate can reduce the deficit and also get reelected. It is no longer a thing.
