I get it. Why aren't people over reacting to the seasonal flu that kills thousands every year and with a vaccine available?

Because seasonal flu doesn't overwhelm our healthcare resources. They are not comparable.

In the 2018-2019 flu season, there were 490K hospitalizations in the US. Spread over a 6 month window it is 81,666 a month and 2,722/day. Is the concern that Corona will have a similar amount of new hospitalizations a day? Or maybe adding only 300+ above the 2,722 can be bad?

The issue is that hospital demand could be 10X, and compressed in a month, for the resources that are relevant.

Fair enough. But as of today, Italy has 1,518 crucially ill cases. Lets says the data is a few says behind. That's 2,000. Italy had only 200 available beds pre-crisis and now it's 10 x larger? Makes no sense.

Italy has now only 1,500 critical cases and they snapped from it. This does not prove that Coronavirus is very contagious and also very deadly. What's 1,500 in a region of 16 million?

Hold that thought for a few days. Watch other hospitals around the world crash. If they don't, something was different about Italy. We might succeed at spreading the load in a way others did not, but that success will be BECAUSE of the "panic." You are working against it.

The panic is misguided, everyone is crying about testing when the real thing we should be doing is preparing extra hospital beds and supplies.

Fair point. But panic that destroys lives - unemployment, anxiety, economic loss...did we really win by creating excess panic? important to highlight Italy as potential scenario to generate urgency but not create undue panic by treating as base case!

If this panic spreads to the streets that will be 1,000x worse than extra busy hospitals for 2 weeks.

1/3 Hospitals in Italy crashed when they were only at 1,000 severe cases. Many NYC area hospitals have always a 24-36 wait time for a bed. They are at the edge of crashing even pre-Corona. As such we should focus more to up access to care; not so much on shutting down!

2/3 As of now, almost all press releases/statements/tweets is about shutting down. If they do that, we may anyway have loads of hospitalizations any day now since Corona is so contagious (that we just don't know yet the real numbers due to no testing). But if the focus is more on

You're so confident in your ability to predict the future. Even if your prediction doesn't happen, you already believe that what you're pushing changed the future. This would prove that you're right, even though it can't be proven since we can only experience one reality.
