People, stop comparing the US healthcare system to Italy’s to explain away the COVID-19 risk. A valid comparison would be Italy with normal flu versus Italy with this one. They are not similar.

The one critical difference between the Chinese and US population is the concept of health maintenance and primary care. The number of undiagnosed diabetics, COPD, cardiac/renal disease is orders of magnitude higher in China. Supplemental oxygen for COPD is not routine in China.

No question, not only from comorbidities, like COPD, which decreases pulmonary reserve, but smoking may also increase ACE2 receptors in the lung, making these folks more suscepibke to infection.
