Can someone smart explain to me how ANY annual virus stops before it infects most of the planet?

Winter brings dry air and central heating and cooling systems make it drier. Thus any building with central heating (malls, office buildings etc) creates a hospitable environment for viral transmission.

When it comes to flu viruses, pretty much: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0057485 … If I read this article correctly, it seems to be the first 15 minutes which hits the virus hardest. After that, the decline occurs at the same rate regardless of humidity.

I wrote a thread on this. This is also a big reason why we use those surgical masks: they keep our airways humid and less susceptible to virus. https://twitter.com/wrathofgnon/status/1230381958770778112?s=21 …https://twitter.com/wrathofgnon/status/1230381958770778112 …

Why is the moisture level of a room important? Viruses love dry air. This is one major reason influenza spreads in the winter when ambient air humidity drops below 35% for months at a time. pic.twitter.com/9u2Wy79BZy

Most air born viruses do not sustain in humidity; the droplets become too heavy and, in effect, are no longer air born. Flu in general loves cold which is why it’s seasonal.

High humidity causes mold to grow. Nobody is saying live in high humidity - we're pointing out there's a sweet spot which minimizes viral transmission on one hand and fungal growth on the other. That sweet spot is around 50% humidity.
