Can someone smart explain to me how ANY annual virus stops before it infects most of the planet?

Flu changes every year. Flu I had last year is not the same strain going around this year. Why we get vaccinated every year and why they are guessing at what strain when we get vaccinated

My son had the flu once 16 years ago. Only occurrence in our family of 4.

To Scott, https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/how-long-do-cold-and-flu-viruses-stay-contagious-on-public-surfaces … The Flu virus remains infective on smooth surfaced for 3 days, but 4 hours on cloth. Covid-19 seems much sturdier, and can infect after drying out from droplets in the air.

We have some immunity because of flu shots. We don't have a covid 19 vaccine so I expect we are all going to die. People are getting it more than once so maybe no natural immunity builds up. If everyone is dead who will feed my dogs?

Almost everyone gets infected with the flu virus. But only those with weak immune systems get sick.

Something unique about covid 19 is that it can (apparently) "survive" for 5 days on a surface. The flu virus only "survives" for 24 hours.
