This is the Coronavirus story I most want to hear: How fast can we manufacture ventilators in America (if at all)? Does any other variable influence survival rates as much?

We do need respiratory techs to operate and monitor the ventilators. One Dr can give settings for many ventilators, but someone needs to keep an eye on the patients. Also need isolation rooms.
-
I'm sure medical planners are looking @ the worst case scenarios & are telling their suppliers. I operated & managed ventilated patients as an ICU & military flight nurse. Just in time vent & infection control training is the mainstay. Families also manage vents @ home.

Ventilators are a complex intervention, shortage is going to be related to the number of people available who know how to use them effectively and safely.

Putting someone on a ventilator is a trainable skill. If that’s all you need to teach someone it shouldn’t be that hard to do.

Do you think Coronavirus will end up being like Y2K where we spend a lot of effort and money and successfully mitigate the problem in the USA? At this point we do not seem well prepared for it, so we need a steep ramp up.
