I know he later condemned the neo-nazis and white supremacists in that speech, but that's not the crux of the criticism. The problem is the statue stuff was a neo-nazi agenda first, with some neutral history buffs there for support, not the other way around.

Not trying to hang the prez on his words (which are usually ineloquent). His sin is constantly downplaying the plight of under-represented groups while downplaying the insidiousness of the supremacists.

When reading that whole speech, in context, he basically has to get verbally arm-wrestled into acknowledging neo-nazis and white supremacists are bad.
