Why was the Sahara Sea project ever abandoned? It could:
Neutralize potential sea level rises
Create mass area for agriculture that is currently desert
New living space and potential for economic zone (w/o rampant African corruption)

It would also increase CO2 uptake via increased ocean surface area, via photsynthesis. About the size of Lake Ontario. Sea level decrease would only be about 3 mm, but it is still better than zero.

One reason the project was abandoned: ‘Atoms for Peace’ program proposed using nuclear explosives to build canals. It was the 50’s before health effects of radiation were fully understood. Egypt balked (rightly). Just use convetional methods and it could gain support today.

Higher ocean surface area would also lead to more clouds. The effect of clouds on climate is poorly understood but would likely cool Earth. see also NSF discussion:https://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=119462 …

This might affect surface currents in the Mediterranean. It wouldn't affect the deeper currents in the Atlantic. The theoretical danger to the Gulf Stream is mainly the Hollywood hypothetical: glacier melt wrecking salinity which in turn might screw up the current.

More water vapor in subtropical Africa would likely increase the number and intensity of hurricanes. Water vapor = Fuel
