The imaginary elephant is that Joe Biden is corrupt or there is sufficient evidence worth investigating him for corruption. (They probably do not actually believe it, they just say it for political purposes, but nonetheless that is the less likely “movie” per your criteria.)

My impression is that Republicans believe there is something swampy worth looking into because of the obvious appearance of conflict. Even the Dem lawyer Goldman agreed with that take. Anyone claiming they know there is a crime there is hallucinating.
