Well no 'scientifically-minded' person would ever say "whatever you think that means" about 'thinking critically'. So I would say @mathonwy is ensconced smack dab in the middle of the la la land where pure, unfettered emotions are self-congratulatorily described as 'art.'

To me, critical thinking encompasses: a) Clarity of objective (to what end are you thinking about a subject) b) Awareness of degree of certainty around the premises c) Awareness of implicit causative beliefs (a causes b) d) Application of sound logic to draw inferences

Critical thinking is one of the most uncomfortable of human endeavors (not the most laborious or hard, but the most uncomfortable). People go to great lengths to avoid critical thinking. Also, many people think they're thinking when they're merely rearranging their biases.

What are you talking about? Critical thinking isn't some mystical thing. People do it all the time. I was thinking critically this morning when I decided one choir should sing the discantus and another the altus due the timbres of their voices and the acoustics of the chapel.

Everyone thinks they have critical thinking skills. But only the people exposed to the thinking styles across domains actually have it. It is learned, not natural.

Yeah, but the thing is that you don't know anything about neuroscience or teaching or anything like that, so you should probably just stick to the domains you know, Mr. Cartoonist.

Yesterday you were arguing against pigeonholing people into a single dimension. Today you're indulging in doing exactly the same. I am sure that is not the kind of critical thinking you would appreciate in others, would you?

Oh my goodness, give it a rest dude. It's not my fault Scott Adams has a weird crackpot theory about which activities in human life are conducive to making people think. This is so asinine and pathetic, just let it go.

Correct. She's incapable of critical thinking once she's reduced to calling people names and ascribing non-existent traits to them.

I think a reasonable position would be that, in your case, it didn't work. That is definite. You're a reactionary crank, Scott. You write for reactionary cranks.

And she blocks me. People who lash out at others in unjustified anger are usually the ones who are not happy with their own life choices and resent others for their success. Like I said, introspection, which is nothing but critical thinking applied to self, is very uncomfortable.
