Was Carter Page a "source" for the CIA or simply someone who did periodic "consulting" for them? The press has used both words. I expect Clinesmith's defense to be that "consulting" is not technically the same as a "source."

It doesn’t really matter what Clinesmith says. He altered the email (ie evidence) from the CIA changing its entire meaning some could justify the FBI’s continued spying on an innocent American. FISA is supposed to stop terrorists, not political opponents.

Depends on how clear the original email was. If they used "source" generically to refer to ordinary consulting services, it might be appropriate to change it to "not a source" to be technically correct for legal paperwork.

The email was evidence. The man altered the wording of the email. He deleted words and inserted his own. There is no excuse for that.

Possibly. But the overwhelming evidence showing the FBI ignoring the Woods Procedures - including finding out in January 2017 that the entire Steele Dossier was disavowed by Steele’s “Sun-Source” - yet they continue to renew it - makes me not give them ANY benefit of the doubt.

If Clinesmith thinks the email wording was not clear, Clinesmith is obligated to Email (so in writing) CIA for clarification, then only use the CIA’s exact words in the FISA

Was the change noted as such? Otherwise, it's doctored evidence.

It would never be appropriate to change the source, ever. If clarification is needed then a footnote or similar method must be used.

Or he was a partisan of the Deep State with confirmation bias, and he knew that he could pull your reasoning out of his hat to have "reasonable deniability." I hypothesize, of course.

So if I think a witness was lying, it’s OK for me to change their testimony to what I think is true and tell the court that’s what the witness said?

Never appropriate to change someone's email. I'll concede changing "legal paperwork".
