Analogies. Is there anything they don't make worse?https://twitter.com/RepAndyBiggsAZ/status/1202257399303868418 …

Law Professor Pamela Karlan equates foreign aid to domestic disaster relief. She has made a false analogy in order to promote her visceral antagonism towards the President.

Analogies are incredibly helpful and useful. Analogies are to reasoned argument what a quick, not-necessarily-perfectly-to-scale diagram is to a difficult word problem.

If you need an analogy to win an argument, you have no reasons. But analogies are useful for introducing a new idea.

You often need an analogy to win an argument. No arguer has the time to chase doen every disagreement over every premise. The analogy allows one to propose the argument wholesale, letting the other person swallow it, thus place minor disagrements in proper perspective.

I'll agree with you the first time I see someone win an argument with an analogy. First 62 years, no sightings.

You don't win an argument with an analogy. You plant a seed. The only time arguments are "won" are: 1) in front of impartial judges 2) rhetorical victory (that doesn't convince the other person) Mind change never happens on sight. It happens when the planted seed grows.

Risky strategy saying “Winning an argument using an analogy is like planting a seed”. If Scott disagrees and doesn’t change his mind 1 year from now he would have proven the metaphor didn’t win the argument.... and thus, the metaphor won the argument—only for him not for you.
