Everyone is still thinking past the sale. Trump asked Zelensky to do an investigation for which many U.S. citizens also had a legitimate interest. That makes it "doing his job," and the alleged "bribery" is routine leader-to-leader stuff.https://twitter.com/ByronYork/status/1199690287553089536 …

Democratic focus groups aside, bribery could be a hard sell, much less attempted bribery. From one decidedly anti-Trump commentator: http://ow.ly/OXtM30pWXyz  https://twitter.com/AnthonyJAlberta/status/1199688574540468225 … pic.twitter.com/p7jVkMXJaf

Generally investigations are predicated on "evidence" as opposed to citizens "having an interest" in it being done. This was not routine stuff as you are trying to claim. He wasn't doing his job, he was withholding aid in order to have an investigation announced.

Investigations are to gather evidence based on suspicion of crime. There is enough with Burisma and Hunter to generate suspicion.

Why isn't there an active DoJ investigation into it then? Why was this specific investigation enough to justify withholding the aid? If this investigation is actually that important, why did Trump back down when this information was discovered?

The "why didn't?" way of understanding things never works. He did it one way, and that one way is compatible with his job function.

That response doesn't really work for my last question. If this were a legitimate use of his power and he isn't at all in the wrong, then I don't understand why he allowed the aid to go through in the end. What do you mean by "compatible with his job function"?

Withholding money is what Trump does. He has delayed sending foreign aid to many countries. It’s consistent with who he is, he doesn’t like giving out money, especially to people he doesn’t know.

He did indeed do it one way, he also only ever wanted an announcement of the investigation. That was enough to create a smear on Biden which was his goal.

An announcement would make it more likely that they would follow through on the investigation.
