you've talked about different 'movies' we see from the same statements. I've literally had to back-track a friend because they missed key words in a statement about a political figure. They selectively removed the words they didn't want to hear and believed the complete opposite.

I think a better comparison is when a rabid sports fan sees their team commit a foul. The opponent's fan often see the foul completely differently. I think Trump is committing moderately serious "fouls" and many of the "fans" on both sides have had their brains melted

True for individuals. For an entire group to NOT see something that is in plain site is rare. You would have defectors.
