True for individuals. For an entire group to NOT see something that is in plain site is rare. You would have defectors.
Cognitive dissonance very often DOES subtract. It doesn't even have to be that important of an event. Hell, watch any football game with a fan of the other team and see how many penalties they refuse to see.

you've talked about different 'movies' we see from the same statements. I've literally had to back-track a friend because they missed key words in a statement about a political figure. They selectively removed the words they didn't want to hear and believed the complete opposite.

Well yeah, but there's also the old poker analogy about the patsy at the game. Or the neophyte investor who think's he's found a sure thing over the market bears. Thing is, whoever has the better information & analysis "typically" ends up with the final enjoyment.
