If the original (incorrect) data validated the theory, nothing's gone wrong. If it didn't, and the corrected data does, science hasn't so much "gone wrong", as it still requires NEW experiment to validate the theory. The corrected data doesn't.

Your clarification makes sense, but my initial reaction was like most others when reading ‘correcting the data’ which triggers me to assume ‘manipulation’. I didn’t pounce on you because I know I can’t read your mind!
