It’s not a tautology, but it is an unsurprising finding. Many people have suggested the contrary. Otherwise equally successful families in terms of education and economic success produce, on average, children with higher rates of criminality and other social dysfunction.

There are weaknesses in the nuclear family model, though. Extended families compensate for lack of experience and relative brittleness in the face of stressors by providing information and emotional and economic cushions. Extended families are less dynamic and less mobile.
