Same magical thinking applies in both cases. If you think I can play center in the NBA, you also have to think a 6-year old girl can play in the NFL. Same reason = magic.

No Scott, some pretty short guys were enlisted into NBA, vs. this: https://www.quora.com/Are-women-allowed-to-play-in-the-NBA … Physically different capabilities between those two biologically distinct categories = as far from "magic thinking", as possible. You can't make a center, well and not a SINGLE woman can.

If you are arguing that a 5' tall senior citizen can play center in the NBA if he is sufficiently determined, I accept your total surrender.

Well, I don't really understand your point, at this stage - you keep making analogies to _really_ arbitrary categories yourself; all the while calling perfectly legit, biologically distinct categories "arbitrary". ...While never addressing the "reductio" presented earlier /1

Your argument makes no sense, so I see no way to address it.

...that's what "reductio ad absurdum" is - I took your thesis ("ALL there is to sports, is unfairness" - roughly); I find example that is patently ABSURD (adults competing against children - pretty unfair, isn't it?), but it fits the thesis - ergo, the thesis is invalid.

Me: All sports are unfair. You: Here’s an example of unfairness. I proved you wrong!

Ok let's try it again: do you propose, that since all there is to sports, is unfairness; then we SHOULD abolish categorizations, based on (valid, non-arbitrary) group distinctions? That seems to be your stand, but I don't want to misrepresent your position.

Why would I care either way what sports leagues do? The market will sort it out.

On abortion you say: women should figure it out. Does that include trans women? On gendered sports abolition you say: markets should figure it out. Aren't people mostly rejecting the idea? Aren't markets deciding against it? Aren't markets persuadable?

Your arguments seem sound. Let merit decide. Categories are arbitrary. Fairness is a loose term. And by the way, sports are unfair by nature. But I think you're singling out only one variable in each. E.g: Sports are fair and unfair, cooperative and competitive, simultaneously.

Categories are arbitrary, but based on observation and natural fenomenae. When we create categories, it's to give an order to complexity according to some visible patterns, so they are both arbitrary and logical at the same time.

this subject fills my Robbie the Robot brain with static. For children, I wish the push was for teaching kids the power of imagination and fantasy over chemical & surgery interventions.
