Sports aren't about the 'greater good'. They're about fun, and at the upper end, about excellence. To the extent that they bother with things like rules, the rules always aim at FAIRNESS, which is defined as not giving an advantage to one party over another.

"The greater good" is both totally subjective in terms of values, and highly dependent on the assumed truth (or otherwise) of many questionable assumptions.
