How can it be true that 18% of Americans have no health insurance, while they get healthcare anyway (for the big stuff), and yet it is NOT affordable to insure all? What big lie are we being sold?

I invited @HConomics into this bcs he is an MD who has a couple of books on the topic of the insurance vs healthcare issue. I am but a relatively new medicare+ insured who was relieved to have exited our one choice ACA insurance option at $900/mo each.

I don’t have insurance because Obamacare is unacceptable. Finding out better care without insurance and negotiating prices. Huge discounts at affordable rates without insurance. Good Rx for prescriptions.

Nice try, Dr. Wacasey. Scott’s just trying to make his own point that “we” can afford to “cover” everybody with numbers like 18%, 9%, 5% with no regard to the benefit or actual result. Another self back-slapping excercise for Scott.

All good points but does not address the math mystery.

It's a definitional question. What does covering mean? Insurance is supposed to protect people from bad luck. Giving everyone insurance protects everyone from bad luck... except some people have _really_ bad luck.

Also, I have an economics degree, so what I say (plus the bell curve) is always correct..
