Some places in world we have much larger presence, seemingly forever. I don’t know if that is a good idea or not. In this case we could pay a small price (keep 50 troops there) to prevent massive tragedy. May be more to story, I hope so.

Hundreds of years? US military hasn’t been anywhere for “hundreds of years”... but we have been a long term stabilizing force in Europe and Asia, since the end of WWII. And it’s helped to prevent WWIII. So yes, a long term stabilizing force is good for the USA.
