Ok. So: anyone can sue anyone for anything, yes. But no, @ScottAdamsSays does not have a valid claim for calling him "basically the louis farrakhan of incel white nationalists." He could of course, bring a vexatious and meritless suit, to harass. /1https://twitter.com/doctorow/status/1176596187849416712 …

The test here is whether a prominent journalist can call a citizen a white nationalist (even with humor) and it means the same as a rando spewing it. If a pro boxer punches a citizen... see it yet?

The fact that I am a public figure doesn't protect the professional news person who knowingly (or carelessly) publishes a falsehood that is damaging to my reputation.

I think there is a serious case here. First, Scott is not an “all-purpose public figure,” but a “limited” one. Trump and Pelosi … you can say almost anything you want about them. But Scott is not in the same category. 1/

Political figures are a different class than public figures. The politicians are less protected, for good reasons. Public figure who also represent a brand, as in my case, are their own category.

The dividing line is not political vs public, but all-purpose vs limited-purpose. A small-town political figure would be limited-purpose (where it is limited to his work as a politician). A national political figure is all-purpose. And it means just what it sounds like.

If all-purpose, you can be talked about in any context for any reason. Some entertainment figures may be all-purpose figures. But you are clearly limited-purpose. Since you talk about politics a lot, and are very famous, that makes you “fair game” to a great extent in politics.
