The g-code parser is probably the easiest DIY part of a commercial 3d printer to replace. If the laser and bed (in SLA) is available at economic scale, a software control will never work.

Scott, you can build your own 3D printer without using a whole lot in the way of commercial hardware. Essentially all you need is a CNC router that has an extruder instead of a cutter. It's not possible to regulate what's printed.

The printer doesn't know what it's printing. It's literally a list of commands like: Go to location A and print a line 4 units long Go to location B and print a line 6 units long
