If you also extrapolate out the decline of the power grid due to batteries and solar creating shifts in that market, you can perhaps predict a lot of used utility bucket trucks and augers coming on the market. I wanted to buy one to turn into a 3d printer in 2013

Throw in drones and surveying equipment being almost automated away due to machine vision and a massive shift in laser range finding tech, and the shift to 5g, and we could quickly get to the point where its all done over the "Internet of Things". Things are moving fast.

I'm going by my interest in literally building a surveying robot drone and the trends in land surveying from oil and natural gas and military engineering. Lots of fun stuff https://www.computerworld.com/article/3199631/how-drones-are-advancing-civil-engineering-and-surveying.html …

Sounds great. Lasers and GPS revolutionized survey. Drones help. People who never built a house speculating how robots will build more in America in 20 years than humans. Lol

Kinda the big idea here "If we can take the human out of the loop in terms of laying foundations or doing super structure fabrication for very large structures..." https://www.asme.org/topics-resources/content/robotic-tech-comes-home-building …

Yeah, I mean... of course R&D is going to be more expensive, apples to oranges comparision. There's also lot of strange things going on in prefab space that would line up with robotic land development that would easily scale to single family.https://www.curbed.com/2017/10/25/16534122/prefab-homes-manufacturing-japan-vs-us …

I’m no Luddite and I understand R&D but a lifetime building houses and well read on tech leaves me to see that robot tech is a solution looking for problems. Economics will win out in the end

I agree on the larger point that we are more technology focused than problem focused. But so many things are happening in the space I would expect some of those paths to be productive.

Ask Lennar KB and other major home builders where this is is going? They have trouble selling homes with prefab walls on products on CA

Meanwhile there is an 8 month waiting list on a cardboard construciton prefab. https://wikkelhouse.com/  Suggests to me poor product-market fit within traditional housing market process.

Intersting conversation, in the meantime we have trenched 10 houses already by 9am this morning in the real world under economic forces. @pulte might have more insight people would believe on this
