I feel like a big part of the deadlock is the gun lobby misrepresenting the intentions and motivations of those wanting more gun regulations. Like ALL major issues we face, it all comes down to money buying political power.

When every single popular Democrat candidate for President is openly advocating for extreme measures, many including forced confiscation, how can you blame hesitancy to work w/ Dems on the gun lobby? They have poisoned the water of compromise. (cont)

I see it similarly to how many GOP were fine with "health of mother" provisions in abortion bills, until these were used as Get Out of Jail Free cards to extend the definition of "health risk" to even include simply being pregnant, completely nulling the restriction.

The vast majority of ppl, both left and right, are in favor of red flag laws, background checks, bump stop bans (thank you Trump) gun show loopgokes and other such measures. I'm advocating these kinds of measures. Id like more but compromise is the only way foward and it's doable

red flag laws - The devil is in the details (who throws flag, due process to prevent abuse) background checks - Exist, but LE doing its job. Making it a federal crime to loan my bro a gun w/o paperwork is just dumb. gun show loopholes - Bit more complicated. (cont)

Assuming by "gun show loophole" you mean the same thing as universal background checks applied to private sellers as gun shows, it's important to consider that an NIJ study showed <2% of weapons involved in crime were bought at gun shows. (cont)

This isn't further broken down by seller, but ~70% of sellers at gun shows are FFL dealers, who are required to perform b/g check for all sales, even at gun shows. IOW, ~1/2% of weapons used in crime may have been purchased through the "gun show loophole." (cont)

Actually, I made a bad assumption in the last post, that since 70% of sellers were FFL dealers that they made 70% of the sales. Given their greater inventory and that many private sellers fall into the collectible or niche market, FFL sales are are the vast majority. (cont)

This is not to say that all the gun crimes were murders or even that all the purchasers would have failed the b/g check, either. So the question becomes if the potential benefit of maybe catching these <1/2% justifies federal regulation of individual sales. (cont)

With regard to mass shootings, I can find no evidence that any of the more notorious shooters bought their weapon(s) at a gun show, much less that they bought from a private seller or took advantage of any gun show loophole. (cont)

The main problem with any proposed gun control law is it violates property rights and the presumption of innocence. At least with criminals and the insane, you follow due process before restricting their rights. Gun laws punish the innocent for the crimes of the guilty.

Which points to my position that those ppl shouldnt of been able to legally buy the guns they did. Will ppl still break the law and get them illegally? Of course. But by far the least logical troupe is "since it wont stop EVERYONE why have the law?" misses the purpose of laws.

If the point is to create friction, then having more guns present does that far more effectively. In Freakonomics, they talk about how increased police presence provably led to decrease in crime. More cops ultimately translates to: more good guys with guns.
